Ephesus Tickets, Opening Hours, and What to Actually See

The Great Theatre of Ephesus with stone tiered seating

TLDR

A standard Ephesus ticket is 40 euros at the 2026 gate price. The Terrace Houses add another 15 euros. A combined Ephesus plus Ephesus Museum ticket is 50 euros. Ephesus opens at 08:00 in summer and 08:30 in winter, closes at 17:00 or 16:30, last entry 30 minutes before. Allow 2 to 3 hours, 4 if you add the Terrace Houses and the museum.

This is the practical visit plan. Prices, hours, which add-ons are worth the extra, and the five things you should not leave without seeing.

Insider Tip

Enter from the upper gate and walk downhill. Most tour groups and cruise coaches disgorge at the lower gate near the Library of Celsus and walk up, which means the Magnesian Gate end is empty for the first 90 minutes of the day. Your driver can drop you at the upper gate and meet you at the lower one.

Ephesus is the best-preserved classical city on the Mediterranean. The main street is 2 kilometres long, mostly flat, and entirely in the open. Wear walking shoes, bring water, and start early.

Ticket Prices in 2026

  • Ephesus Ancient City: EUR 40 (gate price), EUR 30 for holders of the Turkish Museum Pass.
  • Terrace Houses (the mosaics): EUR 15 additional, payable at the Terrace Houses gate inside the site.
  • Ephesus Museum (in Selcuk town): EUR 15 separate, EUR 50 if bought as a combined ticket with the main site.
  • Basilica of St John (Selcuk): EUR 10 separate, worth pairing with the museum on the afternoon of the same day.
  • Audio guide (at the main gate): EUR 10 a unit, EUR 15 for two people sharing.
  • Children under 8 and certain pass holders: free. Students with an official ID get discount.

Ticket prices are fixed in euros at the state’s official rate and occasionally increase mid-year. Check the official Ministry of Culture Ephesus page before you travel. Buy online via the Muzekart system to skip the gate queue on peak days.

Opening Hours

  • Summer season (April 1 to October 31): 08:00 to 19:00. Last entry 18:30.
  • Winter season (November 1 to March 31): 08:30 to 17:30. Last entry 17:00.
  • Closed: Religious holiday mornings (first day of Ramazan Bayrami and Kurban Bayrami, until 13:00).
  • Terrace Houses: Same hours as the main site, but the gate occasionally closes early on hot August afternoons.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“It’s quite a cute and lovely place. You will see many shops selling Turkish coffee that is cooked using heated sand. The place is quite small, going around the village does not take long at all.”

When to Arrive

Arrival timing matters more than any other planning decision. Between 10:30 and 14:00 in peak season the main street from the Library of Celsus down to the theatre is crowded shoulder to shoulder with cruise groups from Kusadasi port.

  • Target: 08:00 at the upper gate, 15:00 at either gate.
  • Avoid: 10:30 to 14:00 in July and August. The site is technically walkable but the photographs are full of people and the Terrace Houses queue hits 40 minutes.
  • Shoulder season (May, September, October): any time works. Crowds rarely exceed 50% of peak.
  • Winter (November to March): wonderfully empty, but check for morning rain on the marble street.

The Five Things Not to Miss

  • Library of Celsus. The reconstructed facade is the headline image of Ephesus. Ten minutes. Photograph from the east side for the carved columns to catch the light.
  • Terrace Houses. The extra 15 euros buys you into covered Roman domestic interiors with mosaic floors and frescoes that survived because the roof collapsed onto them in the 7th century. Skip these and you miss the best part of the site.
  • Great Theatre. 25,000-seat stone theatre carved into the hillside at the western end. Walk up to the top row for the view down the processional way towards the ancient harbour.
  • Marble Street and Curetes Street. The two long streets connecting Celsus to the theatre. Look for the chariot wheel ruts worn into the paving.
  • The public latrines. A 40-seat stone bench with water channels beneath. Easy to walk past. One of the most unexpectedly memorable bits of the site.

Allow 90 minutes for a quick walk-through, 3 hours for a proper visit with the Terrace Houses, and 4 to 5 hours if you also visit the Ephesus Museum and the Basilica of St John in Selcuk town. What to Pair It With

Most visitors add one or two of the following to the Ephesus day. The House of the Virgin Mary is 7 km uphill from the upper gate and runs about 45 minutes including the shrine walk. Sirince village is 15 minutes east of Selcuk with wine tastings and shops. The Ephesus Museum in Selcuk town houses the statuary that was excavated from the site.

Want to Spend a Night Near Ephesus?

Selcuk is 3 km from the lower Ephesus gate and has stone-house boutiques, family-run pensions, and bigger hotels on the road to Kusadasi. You save a transfer day and reach the site by 08:00 with no fuss.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the Ephesus entry fee in 2026?

The standard ticket is EUR 40 at the gate. The Terrace Houses are an additional EUR 15. A combined Ephesus plus Ephesus Museum ticket is EUR 50 and saves a few euros versus buying separately.

Are the Terrace Houses worth the extra 15 euros?

Yes. The mosaic floors and painted frescoes are the best preserved Roman domestic interiors on the Mediterranean, and they are covered, so you escape the summer sun. Skipping them is the single most common first-time-visitor regret.

What time does Ephesus open?

08:00 in summer (April 1 to October 31) and 08:30 in winter. Last entry is 30 minutes before the 17:30 or 19:00 closing time. Target an 08:00 start if you are visiting in July or August.

How long do you need at Ephesus?

90 minutes for a quick pass through. 2.5 to 3 hours for a proper visit including the Terrace Houses. 4 to 5 hours if you also visit the Ephesus Museum in Selcuk and the Basilica of St John.

Can you buy Ephesus tickets online?

Yes, via the official Muzekart online system (muze.gen.tr). This saves the gate queue on peak-season days, particularly if a cruise is in at Kusadasi. Bring a printed or screen copy of the QR code.

Is there shade at Ephesus?

Very little. The Terrace Houses have a covered roof and the upper seating of the Great Theatre has partial shade. Everything else is in the open. In July and August, arrive at 08:00, carry at least a litre of water per person, and wear a hat.
