TLDR
Izmir to Ephesus is 80 km. A private transfer does the run in about 1 hour and costs EUR 80 to 110 one way. An organised tour from an Izmir hotel runs EUR 45 to 90 a head and takes care of the ticket and a guide. The local bus via Selcuk costs under EUR 8 but takes 2 to 2.5 hours end to end. For most travellers a private transfer is the right answer.
This guide covers all three in real numbers, what each includes, and when to pick which one.
Insider Tip
If you can, stay overnight in Selcuk instead of doing Ephesus as a day trip. A private transfer from Izmir to Selcuk is the same EUR 80 to 110, you save a second trip back, and you arrive at Ephesus at 08:00 before the cruise coaches from Kusadasi land.
Ephesus is Turkey’s most visited archaeological site. Peak-season visitor flow is between 10:30 and 15:00, driven almost entirely by cruise day-trippers coming inland from the Kusadasi port. Your transport choice mostly controls whether you arrive before or after that wave.
Option 1: Private Car Transfer
A pre-booked private car is the fastest, most flexible option, and the one we recommend for couples, families, and anyone short on time. The driver picks you up from your Izmir hotel, runs you to Ephesus in about an hour on the O-31 motorway, waits while you tour, and drives you back. You can add a stop at Sirince on the way home.
- Price: EUR 80 to 110 one way, EUR 140 to 200 return with waiting time. Saloon car, 3 passengers. Minivan for 4 to 8 is EUR 180 to 260 return.
- Time: About 1 hour 5 minutes door to door in the morning, 1 hour 15 minutes in the afternoon.
- Includes: Driver, vehicle, fuel, tolls, waiting time at Ephesus. Does not include your entry ticket or guide.
- Book via: Your Izmir hotel concierge, or our transfer page for local operators.
Best for a Friday-arrival short break where you want to hit Ephesus early on Saturday morning and be back in Izmir for dinner.

Option 2: Organised Day Tour
The easy option. A tour operator picks you up at your hotel around 08:30, drives you in an air-conditioned minivan or coach, gives you a guide at Ephesus, and usually adds the House of Virgin Mary and sometimes Sirince or the Temple of Artemis. You are back in Izmir by 17:00 to 18:00.
- Price: EUR 45 to 60 a head for a shared group tour. EUR 120 to 180 a head for a private small-group tour with a senior guide.
- Time: 8 to 9 hours door to door. Typical format has 2 hours at Ephesus, 45 minutes at Virgin Mary, 90 minutes for lunch, shorter stops at Temple of Artemis or Sirince.
- Includes: Transport, licensed guide, hotel pickup and drop-off. Entry tickets are sometimes extra, sometimes included, so confirm before booking.
- Book via: Local operators listed on our Ephesus tours page, or your hotel concierge.
Best for solo travellers, families who want a guided narrative, or anyone who specifically wants the House of Virgin Mary as part of the day.
“A truly peaceful and spiritual place. The House of the Virgin Mary offers a calm atmosphere surrounded by nature, perfect for reflection and prayer. It is well worth the visit.”
Option 3: Local Bus via Izmir Otogar and Selcuk
The budget option. Independent travellers comfortable with two bus legs can do Izmir to Ephesus for under EUR 8 each way. The journey is not hard but takes time.
From central Izmir, take the IZBAN commuter train to the Izmir main bus station (Otogar). From Otogar, Kamil Koc, Pamukkale or Nevsehir operate hourly coaches to Selcuk. From Selcuk otogar, a short dolmus minibus or a 15 to 20 TL taxi takes you the last 3 km to the Ephesus lower gate. Reverse the whole thing to get home.
- Price: Around 50 TL for the coach to Selcuk, 15 to 20 TL for the dolmus or taxi to Ephesus, plus the IZBAN fare. Total each way well under EUR 8 in 2026.
- Time: 2 to 2.5 hours each way including waiting.
- Includes: Transport only. No guide, no tickets, no hotel pickup.
- Starts and ends at: Izmir Otogar on the edge of the city. Build in the IZBAN time from your hotel.
Best for budget-first backpackers, solo travellers on long trips, and anyone whose priority is the journey itself.

When to Arrive at Ephesus
Timing matters more than transport choice. Ephesus opens at 08:00 in summer and 08:30 in winter. The cruise coaches from Kusadasi start arriving from 09:30. Between 10:30 and 14:00 the main street is crowded. After 15:00 the coaches leave and the site quietens again until the 17:00 closing.
Target 08:00 arrival or 15:00 arrival. For the full background see our visit Ephesus primer.
Should You Base in Izmir or Selcuk?
If Ephesus is the whole point of your trip, consider basing two or three nights in Selcuk instead of day-tripping from Izmir. You are a 10-minute drive from the site, you walk to the Basilica of St John at sunset, and you eat dinner at a stone-terrace meyhane in the old town for a fraction of Izmir prices. Then one transfer back to Izmir at the end for the return flight.

How far is Ephesus from Izmir?
About 80 km on the O-31 motorway. Driving time is just over an hour in normal traffic. Selcuk town, where most Ephesus hotels sit, is 3 km further south of the lower gate.
How much is an Ephesus tour from Izmir in 2026?
A shared group tour is EUR 45 to 60 per person. A private small-group tour with a senior licensed guide is EUR 120 to 180 per person. A private car transfer without a guide is EUR 140 to 200 return for up to three people.
Can you do Ephesus as a day trip from Izmir?
Yes, comfortably. Allow 8 to 9 hours door to door if you want Ephesus, the House of Virgin Mary, and a lunch stop. Target a 08:00 arrival at Ephesus to beat the cruise coaches from Kusadasi.
Is it worth getting a guide at Ephesus?
For most first-time visitors, yes. The signage at the site is minimal and the context that turns a ruin into a civic centre needs telling. A licensed guide runs EUR 50 to 100 for a two-hour tour. Audio guides are available at the gate for about EUR 10.
Can you take a train from Izmir to Ephesus?
Indirectly. There is no train to Ephesus itself. The nearest rail is at Selcuk, and the Basmane to Selcuk regional train is cheap but infrequent, usually three departures a day. Most budget travellers use the coach via Izmir Otogar instead.
What time does Ephesus open and close?
Usually 08:00 to 17:00 in summer and 08:30 to 16:30 in winter. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Confirm current hours on the Ministry of Culture page before you travel.
