Izmir Weather
What to expect, month by month, and what to pack for each.
In one paragraph
Mediterranean in the strict sense
Hot dry summers, mild damp winters, almost no extreme weather. The sea is warm enough to swim from late May to early October. Snow shows in the city about once every five years and is gone by lunch.
What to pack
A simple seasonal kit
- Summer: linen, a hat, real sunglasses, a light cover-up for evenings
- Spring & autumn: layers, one light waterproof, swimming kit just in case
- Winter: a proper jacket, leather shoes, an umbrella you do not mind carrying
- Year round: comfortable shoes for cobbles and Roman pavements
- For Ephesus: a hat, water, and shoes you can walk 4 km in

Sea temperature
When the water is properly warm
The Aegean off Cesme and Ozdere reaches 23-25 °C in July and August, hovers around 22 °C through September, and is still 20 °C into early October. May is swimmable for the brave; April is cold.
