TLDR
Izmir has a Mediterranean climate with long dry summers and mild, wet winters. The sweet spots are late April to mid-June and September to mid-October. July and August are reliably hot at 33 to 38°C but the sea is warm and the coast is alive. November to March is quiet, 8 to 17°C, with most coastal resorts closed.
This is the honest month-by-month breakdown, with temperatures, sea temperatures, rain, and what each month is actually good for.
Insider Tip
The biggest trap is booking late October for a beach week. Coastal resorts in Cesme, Alacati and Ozdere start shutting around the 15th. The city itself stays warm and open, but anyone coming for sea-and-sun is better off locking in the last two weeks of September.
Izmir sits on the Aegean at 38 degrees north, the same latitude as San Francisco and Athens. The climate follows the classic Mediterranean pattern. If you know when to visit Greece, you broadly know when to visit Izmir.
Spring: April, May, Early June
- April. 12 to 21°C by day, 8°C overnight. Rainfall drops off from mid-month. Sea at 17°C, too cold for most swimmers. Hills around the city are green. Cafes spill onto pavements again.
- May. 16 to 26°C. A shoulder-season high point. Sea warms to 19 to 21°C by the end of the month. Coastal resorts open from mid-month. Hotel rates are about 40 percent below August.
- Early June. 20 to 30°C. Sea at 22°C. Windsurfing season starts properly in Alacati Bay. Good for both city and coast.
Spring is our standard recommendation for a first-time visit. Long daylight, mild evenings, manageable crowds even at Ephesus. For the trip planner view see our when to visit Izmir page.

Summer: Late June, July, August
- Late June. 24 to 32°C by day. Sea at 23 to 24°C. First real heat week of the year.
- July. 25 to 34°C, average around 32°C at midday. Sea at 25°C. Near-zero rainfall. Peak season prices begin the first week.
- August. 26 to 36°C, one or two 38 to 40°C days possible. Sea at 26°C, warmest of the year. The region’s busiest month and most expensive.
Summer is perfect for a beach-first trip to Cesme, Alacati or Ozdere. It is hard work in the city between 13:00 and 17:00. Locals disappear indoors during that window and reappear for rooftop dinners after 21:00. If you are visiting Ephesus in July or August, go at opening time and be out before 11:00.
“So much energy, excitement and entertainment. And it was decidedly cold when we were here.”
Autumn: September and October
- September. 21 to 30°C, average 28°C. Sea at 25°C, still warm. The month most regular visitors name as their favourite.
- Early October. 17 to 26°C, sea still at 23°C. Shoulder-season rates return. Resorts operating but with reduced menus.
- Mid to late October. 14 to 22°C. First proper rain usually arrives around the 15th. Coastal resorts in Cesme, Alacati and Ozdere close in rolling waves between the 10th and the end of the month.
If you want one recommendation for a balanced trip with good weather, manageable crowds and the best coastal hotel choice, the third and fourth weeks of September are as close to optimal as the calendar offers.
Winter: November, December, January, February, March
- November. 10 to 17°C. Wettest month of the year, around 130 mm. Coastal resorts largely closed. The city stays open and atmospheric.
- December and January. 5 to 13°C. Rain most weeks. Short daylight. A cold snap with low single digits hits most years. Snow on the inland hills possible, rare in the city itself.
- February. 6 to 14°C. Rain beginning to taper. First almond and crocus blossoms on the inland hills. Good month for Ephesus if you can time a dry day.
- March. 8 to 17°C. Rainfall halves. Green countryside. Boutique hotels in the old towns start reopening from mid-month.
Winter is the wrong time for a beach holiday and the right time for a 3-night city trip focused on bazaars, museums and Ephesus. You will have the ancient sites largely to yourself.
Sea Temperature by Month
Swimming comfortable from late May through October for most northern European visitors.
- April: 17°C · May: 20°C · June: 23°C · July: 25°C
- August: 26°C · September: 25°C · October: 22°C · November: 18°C
- December to March: 15 to 17°C, below swimming temperature for most.
When Each Part of the Region Is at Its Best
- Izmir city. All year. Best in May, June, September.
- Cesme and Alacati. May to late September. Avoid after 15 October.
- Ephesus and Selcuk. April to mid-June, September to October. Too hot in July and August for a proper walk-through.
- Balcova thermal hotels. All year. Busiest in winter when the indoor thermal pools are the point of the trip.
- Sirince vineyards. April to mid-November. Wine tasting best in September after harvest.
Climate data is based on long-term averages from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (Meteoroloji Genel Müdürlüğü). Your actual week may shift a degree or two in either direction.

What is the best month to visit Izmir?
Mid-May or the third week of September. Both offer warm days in the mid-20s, sea warm enough for swimming, and crowds well below August peak. September is fractionally warmer in the sea. May has slightly longer daylight.
Is Izmir hot in August?
Yes. Daily highs average 34°C with some days pushing 38°C. Nights stay above 22°C. The city is manageable on a schedule that uses mornings and evenings and retreats indoors between 13:00 and 17:00.
When does the Izmir beach season close?
The beach season winds down from mid-October. Most Cesme and Alacati coastal hotels shut or scale back between October 10th and 25th. A few Ozdere and Gumuldur resorts push into early November. The sea itself stays at around 22°C through the first half of October.
Is it worth visiting Izmir in winter?
For a city break focused on bazaars, museums, Ephesus and thermal hotels, yes. For a beach or coastal-village holiday, no. The city itself is one of the warmer winter options in Turkey but you will see rain most weeks and the coastal resorts are closed.
When can you swim in the sea at Izmir?
Comfortably from late May to late October. July, August and September are warmest at 25 to 26°C. May and October sit around 20 to 22°C, fine for regular Aegean swimmers but cool to Caribbean standards.
